Sound Meter is a useful app that lets you measure the noise level of the environment around you and displays the results in decibels (dB). It shows you references that allow you to understand the extent of the noise level you are currently experiencing. This app uses the microphone of your device for measuring sound levels. So, you just have to point the phone’s microphone to the source of the sound to measure the noise level. You will see the reading appear on a gauge and also in digital format at the base of the gauge.

Sound Meter has an intuitive user interface that meshes well with its user-friendly design and layout. You won’t have any issues using this sound app to measure the noise level of various situations and actions. As soon as you open the app, it will begin to detect sound and show you a reading on the gauge located at the center of the screen. This reading will continue to flicker as it refreshes after every few seconds. You will see an average reading at the base of the gauge along with a reference noise level. This reference will let you know where else would you experience such sound levels. For instance, if you are in a room, the noise level won’t be higher than 45dB which is the equivalent of being in a quiet library.

This sound app doesn’t just show you the average reading of the noise level to you. You can see the minimum and maximum readings below the reference noise level. Underneath these readings, you will see a graph. This graph shows you how the noise level has been progressing while you have been measuring it. You will see all the high and low points within the graph much more easily. When measuring the noise level of weather phenomenon like thunder, the graph will fluctuate in between extreme highs and lows. However, it won’t show much deviation when you are measuring the noise level within a room. There is a noise level reference chart that you can pull up in this app by clicking the A with an underline symbol located at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Sound Meter allows you to calibrate the decibels of your device too. This helps you in getting an accurate reading of the noise level around you. The microphones of each device are different and thus, the calibrating is necessary to ensure that the reading you are getting is the right one. You can perform the calibration for your device by clicking the plus minus icon located at the bottom-left corner of the screen. It will open a small window in which you can adjust the decibels depending on your device to complete the calibration process.
